CLEARFIELD COUNTY, Pa. (WJAC) — A father and his two children had to be flown to safety Monday after they left for a rafting trip on the West Branch of the Susquehanna River on Sunday afternoon but never arrived at their destination.
Authorities said a 43-year-old man and his two children began their recreational rafting trip at Rolling Stone Road and were supposed to make it to Karthaus before dark.
When the three did not make it to their destination, family members became concerned and reported the situation to emergency officials.
Officials said the trip is 11 miles and usually takes about four or five hours to complete, but the three were not familiar with the waters and only made it halfway there. The
Pine Glen Fire Department, Karthaus Fire and EMS, Pennsylvania State Police Woodland and Rockview, Centre County Water Rescue and the Centre County Emergency Management Agency responded.
Due to low water conditions along the river, emergency responders called in a State Police helicopter to assist and eventually get the family to safety.
Officials said that, aside from being hungry and dehydrated, the three were uninjured.
Authorities said this is the fourth water rescue that has been made on the river within the past month.
