Deer hunting season sees more business for local butcher

May 2024 · 2 minute read

Saturday was the start of deer hunting season. For some, it's an opportunity for quality time with friends and family outside. For others, it's an opportunity for more business.

It's also the season for hunters to snipe a buck or two. And for some butchers, it's the season to make a buck or two.

"A lot of guys like to cut up their deer themselves, and some guys don't have the time in the busy world we live in," says Ben Rojik. "So, they bring it to me."

Rojik is the owner of the Butcher Block Custom Meat Company, located outside of Petersburg, in Huntingdon County.

"The weather cools down and it's just kind of go time, you know what I mean?"

The first day of deer hunting season in Pennsylvania for him means lots of customers, from far and wide.

"It's been pretty steady, one after another, guys bringing, you know, two, three deer at a time. So, we're probably getting close to 20 to 30 right now."

That was only at 1:15pm, with much of the day left to go, and deer and the odd black bear piling up in his skinning room.

"The first couple days can be pretty crazy, and then, you know, things start to dwindle down, guys head back from camp back to where they're from, things like that."

As for the rest of the season, he expects there to "be some ups and downs, as far as numbers," adding that "Saturday will be pretty busy a week from today, and it just depends."

Firearm season for deer ends Dec. 10th in Pennsylvania. So, there's plenty of time to hit the woods and make some memories.

"It's just a great tradition for families to get out and hunt," Rojik says. "We're grateful and thankful to have their business."
